The City of Burnet is an incorporated Home Rule City. Voters approved the Home Rule Charter in 2000. The city operates under a Council / Manager form of government meaning that the City Council makes and adopts regulations, laws and policy and the City Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the city.

Mayor and Council

The City Council consists of a mayor and six council members, all of which are voting members. The mayor and all council members are elected at-large. The Mayor and three council members are elected in odd numbered years and the other three council members are elected in even numbered years. Members are elected to two-year terms and may serve no more than three consecutive terms. Special elections are held to fill vacancies on the council.
