Qualifying Life Event

Once you make your benefit elections during open enrollment or after newly being hired, your choices remain in effect until the next annual Open Enrollment.

You are able to make a qualified Life Status Change Event if you or your eligible dependents become eligible for coverage through special enrollment rules.

If you have a qualified life status change event you can make certain changes during the plan year.  However, you must make your enrollment change within 31 days of the event by providing documentation to Human Resources.  If you do not enroll within 31 days, you  will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment to make new elections.

Qualified Life Status Change  Events include, but are not limited to:

  • Change in number of eligible dependents due to birth, adoption, placement for adoption or death
  • Gain or loss of dependent status (ie. your child reaches the age limit for eligibility)
  • Change in legal marital status, including marriage, divorce, or death of a spouse
  • Change in residence or workplace that changes your or your dependent's eligibility coverage
  • Change in employment status, such as starting or ending employment, for you, your spouse or your children
