Doing Our Part to Protect the Earth

The City of Burnet offers residential citizens and small businesses the opportunity to participate in single-stream curbside recycling. This page provides important information on how single-stream curbside recycling works.

ACDI (the City's solid waste provider) collects recyclable materials in a special green cart. The cart should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on your recycling day. Place your cart at the curb or edge of the street or alley with the handle facing toward your house (away from the street). Be sure there is a minimum clearance of three (3) feet on all sides of the carts, including mailboxes, trees, cars, etc.

Your recycling day is the same day as your trash day but every other week. (Recyclables should not be sorted into types.) See the link below for a map of the pick-up routes. If the 95-gallon cart is too big for you to handle call the City to request a smaller 65- gallon cart. The cost is the same regardless of the size of the cart. Elderly or disabled customers may request a house-side pickup by calling the City.

Citizens should place all eligible recyclable products into the green cart without bundling or bagging them. Businesses who wish to use the recycling system should contact the City at (512) 756-6093 to see if they are eligible to participate in the recycling program.

What you can place in your recycling cart

Plastics

Plastics No. 1, 2,3, 4, 5 and 7 only (The symbol will be stamped on the bottom of plastic containers). Water, soda and juice bottles, milk jugs, shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap bottles, detergent bottles, bleach and all-purpose cleaner bottles, margarine tubs, yogurt containers, empty medicine bottles, clean frozen food trays, plastic lids from bottles, plastic takeout containers, plastic produce containers, plastic disposable plates, cups and utensils (check the recycling number on the product).

Metal Containers

Aluminum cans, such as soda cans; tin and steel cans, such as soup cans and tuna cans; empty aerosol cans; metal lids from glass jars.

Paper

Newspapers and inserts, magazines, catalogs, junk mail and envelopes (No product samples; envelope labels and windows are OK), boxboard (thin cardboard like cereal boxes, shoe boxes, soda cartons, etc.), holiday and greeting cards, phone books, home office paper (stickies, manila envelopes and file folders and paper ream wrappers are OK), paper bags except for gift bags.

Corrugated Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard is thick and has a wavy middle layer. Moving and mailing boxes are usually made from corrugated cardboard.

Glass

Clear, green and amber glass. Put the glass containers in your recycling cart with all your recyclables. There is no need to remove labels. Metal lids from glass jars may also go in your recycling cart.

How to prepare your recyclables

Recyclables must fit in the container.
It is not necessary to sort or bag your recyclables. They will be sorted at the recycling station.
Remember that recycling containers will only be picked up every other week. You may want to rinse cans or plastics that have contained food in order to keep the recycling container fresh.
PLASTIC BAGS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE. Do not place your recyclables in plastic bags before putting them in the container.

Other options for recycling

Household Debris

The City offers "Chunk your Junk" on the first Saturday of every month from 8am-12pm. Household debris, leaves, trimmings, tires and many other items will be excepted. Watch for the dates on your Utility bill and in the monthly Newsletter. The City has also teamed up with ACDI to offer a Bulky Waste pick up on the first full week of every month, on your trash day. They will pick up 3 cubic yards extra for free. These dates are also on your Utility bill and in the Newsletter.

Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous waste such as paint or stain, motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides, batteries, and televisions and computer monitors must be disposed of appropriately.

Burnet County, the City of Burnet, the City of Marble Falls, and others sponsor household hazardous waste disposal events each year.

How you can help prevent ILLEGAL DUMPING

Illegal dumping is a serious issue in Texas and across the country. Not only is it a blight on the countryside but it is also carries a fine and possible jail time if convicted. Dumpsites are dangerous. They can contain broken glass, exposed metal, hazardous wastes and other unsafe materials. Also, rats, snakes, mosquitoes and other pests are attracted to dumpsites, creating serious health hazards.

What you can do.

Dispose of your litter properly and encourage others to do the same
Spread the word to friends and neighbors that illegal dumping is a crime
Organize volunteer cleanups of illegal dumpsites
Report illegal dumping to the Burnet Police Department at 512.756.6404 or the Code Enforcement Office at 512.756.6093
